JUDSON COLLEGE: Dr. Jessica Spafford and Miriam Nicholson to give faculty recital Oct. 22

Judson College issued the following announcement on Oct. 15.

The Judson College Department of Music will host soprano Dr. Jessica Spafford, Assistant Professor of Music and department head, and pianist Miriam Nicholson in a faculty recital Thursday, October 22. The event will begin at 7:00pm in Alumnae Auditorium on the Judson College campus in Marion, Ala.

The program, entitled “Into the Beautiful”, will feature works spanning the 19th and 20th centuries in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese by such composers as Puccini, Debussy, Gilbert and Sullivan, R. Strauss, and Previn.

Spafford, who joined the Music Department faculty in 2018,  has had success nationally and abroad.  In 2016, she was recruited to sing the “Queen of the Night” in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte with the Radebeul Landesbühnen Sachsen Theater in Dresden. She presented the U.S. premiere of Lauren Spavelko’s song cycle Baby Book at the Music by Women Festival in 2018, a year during which she also sang the world premiere of songs by Larry Taylor at the International Bridgewater Poetry Festival, served as a featured soloist for songs by Bernstein and excerpts from Candide with the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival, collaborated on an operatic concert project with the Bronx opera, and was a guest artist for the 38th Annual Contemporary Music Festival at James Madison University. Spafford has served as the soprano soloist on Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Schubert’s Mass in G with the Shenandoah Chamber Society, performed as a featured Bach artist for the “Bach Around the Clock” Festival, and given various recitals at institutions such as Auburn University, Mary Baldwin University, Eastern Mennonite University, Judson College, and more.

Miriam Nicholson is a graduate of the Judson College Music Department, which she currently serves as collaborative pianist for recitals, lessons, choir, and musical scenes productions. Additionally, Nicholson serves as the chapter advisor for Judson’s Delta Omicron music honor society and works as a professional church musician in Marion, Ala.
