As we continue to celebrate the grand opening of our new cardiac cath lab, we would like to introduce Dr. Steven Allyn, cardiologist at Vaughan Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Allyn’s interest in cardiology began during his internal medicine residency at the Indiana University School of Medicine. With nine years at VRMC and 35 years of experience practicing cardiology, Dr. Allyn praises the newest available technology in cardiac care. “I have seen dramatic advances in our abilities to manage patients with angina and heart attacks,” he said. “We have a brand new, state-of-the-art cath lab which gives us the opportunity to provide quality evaluation and intervention right here in Selma.”

“Current technology allows us to make interventions that can limit cardiac symptoms and interrupt an acute heart attack,” Dr. Allyn explained. “We approach all cardiac cases with the goal to provide the optimal benefit with the least risk. While each cardiac case is different, the goal remains the same for every patient.”

Some cardiac events can’t wait for care, as Dr. Allyn explained in one notable success story. “A few years ago, we had a man come into the ER who was quickly diagnosed as having an ST elevation MI. That is a very serious heart attack that needs immediate intervention,” he said. “The patient had severe blockage. Multiple times during his procedure, we didn’t think he was going to make it. With the help of our amazing cardiac care team, we were able to restore blood flow,” Dr. Allyn said.

Saving his patient’s life was only the beginning of a connection that Dr. Allyn says is the most enjoyable part of his career. “Getting to know my patients and the relationships we have developed over the years has been truly rewarding,” Dr. Allyn said. “I was able to see that man walk into my office for a follow-up a few weeks later. He still plays guitar for his church to this day.”

When he’s not caring for patients, Dr. Allyn spends his free time horseback riding at Camp Grist and working in his yard. And, perhaps surprising for a cardiologist, he enjoys the fantastic steaks from Gabe’s Grocery.

VRMC’s new state-of-the-art cath lab is one of many ways our hospital continues to improve services and increase positive health outcomes. “We continually strive to meet the needs and challenges of the Selma community,” Dr. Allyn said. “Our physicians and staff are well-trained and highly motivated to provide you with high-quality care. I have the privilege of working with a quality team in our new cath lab to serve our community.”
